Off to London Town! (briefly) It may be a few days before I have internet again.

California is known for a lot of things. Last week, I got to see quite a few I didn't know much about. And it was amazing )
windemere: (Default)
I'll be homeward bound in a few hours. Well, I say 'homeward' when I really mean 'back to my Parent's for a few days before I FINALLY get to go HOME to ENGLAND!

I really hope it takes many less hours to get back to Toronto then it took to get to San Fran last week. I can't deal with another 18 hours in airports just to fly 3/4 of the way across the country.

Okay, so the way to fly to San Fran is not via New York City. Apparently that is not a concept Delta understands. I didn't get in until 11pm after a cancelled flight and two delays. And have I mentioned Rachel lives 1.5 hours from the airport?

In Anaheim now at Disneyland. Drove down yesterday and I actually drove through LA! Me! It was not as bad as I thought. Driving the first stretch tomorrow too. We are taking a bit of a different route back. By which I mean completely different. We're headed up the 395 up the east side of the Sierra Mountains and then through Yosemite. It will take about 8 hours without stops but who cares? Nowhere to be until Sunday night. Might stay in the mountains for a night or go to the hot springs. Get to drive through some of Death Valley so looking forward to it. Will be able to say I've done quite a bit of California after this trip. Worth it!

Today at Disney so much fun. Dinner at the hotel right now and then back for the fireworks. And then bed because I am very tired!

Monday is Yosemite Valley and then flying back on Tuesday. Don't want to go!!!!!

Still, more than half an awesome road trip still to look forward to. :)

I will be in California until further notice. If you need me, for whatever reason...

I've a better idea. Don't need me! :)

This is a bit pointless. It's not like, as individuals, we have any affect on the weather, even as a world population we do.

But in the last 12 months I think most people, at least who own a tv or radio and get anything resembling international news, are starting to wonder. I don't go in for apocalypse theories and I really don't believe the Mayan's are going to be the ones that get it right. But you have to start to wonder, what with the freak weather *and* the severe earthquakes within the last year, if the world is trying to tell us something. I'm not thinking 'THE END HAS COME' or anything so dramatic, but it's one event after another and in so short a time those add up.

The question on everyone's mind is 'is this going to permanent?' Is this the state of the world now? 8.9 mag earthquakes that cause tsunamis that impact and entire ocean. Freak snowstorms that hit Athens and New Mexico. Flooding across areas of land so large they impact the future of entire countries. Destruction of crops on such a massive level the affect exports and demand. Floods and snow and winds and drought and fires. If it's not one it's another every single day. And that's on top of humans causing destruction.

And if there's one thing on this entire planet that we cannot control, beyond the damage we have already done, it's the weather. We are utterly at the mercy of that part of life. And I think that should terrify the average person, if they stop to think about it. Because there's not many places left in this world that you can go and not expect destructive weather to catch you.

And South-western Ontario will argue today that not even this area is safe.

It's been one of those awesome weeks where I get to do fun and new things every single day! Okay, not so much on Tuesday, since I've flown both on my own and on this same route to Florida before.

Monday was not a good start to the week. I found out I didn't get my funding for my PhD and immediately reacted according to my New Years resolution which was 'don't panic, things will work out'. I was rather proud of myself, even if I didn't sleep all that well that night.

Yesterday (Wednesday) I got to go flying in a 4 seater Cessna with my aunt as the pilot! Did a tour east and west along the Emerald Coast and got to see the Hilton resort from the air, as well as Seaside, which is the town that was constructed for the movie The Truman Show. I saw it from the ground last year, but it looks much more familiar from 1000ft! I backed out of the offer for my own flying lesson, though; I'm not quite ready for that yet!

Today my aunt took me to the driving range. I've never swung a golf club (outside of the mini putt), but I think I did pretty well after a short lesson! I actually hit the ball down the fairway a few times, tried out different clubs, and then on the green I managed to put 3 holes in one! My aunt says she's quitting the game now, I made her look bad. It was probably beginners luck. I do know that there are muscles in my back that I have never used before today. Tomorrow will be a painkiller day! We're going to go again on Monday, if the weather holds. Today was very windy, which didn't help my swing. The aunt has even said she might take me shopping for my own clubs, so when I do lessons this summer I won't have to rent or borrow hers (which aren't good for me and didn't help my aim today). I get why people find this fun! And I like a new challenge.

Tomorrow we are taking a rain day and driving out to Alabama (it's only 2 hours away) to tour the USS Alabama in mission. It's a huge museum complex and then there's a few other cultural things we might try out, depending on the weather.

Sunday there is a dog parade in the town centre and we are going out to a really good restaurant for dinner with Todd's family. Must go shop and find something to wear! We did a bit of shopping today. There's a great kitchen store here, so I bought some stuff for mum for xmas for the coach. Also, there's a great fitness clothes store, so I got some new things there (much cheaper than lulu!) which are proving very comfortable on the sunburn I managed to get. I sat outside by the pool this morning for an hour and a half and tanned, then went to the range and burnt! Oops! Must be more careful on Monday. Next two days of cloud will actually be a blessing.

But the great thing about this week? My aunt told me that I am going to England NO MATTER WHAT. Even mum admitted that her comment last year of 'if you don't get funding you aren't going' changed on Monday to, 'well, we'll see if we can help you out, but you better get something in second and third year'. My aunt was all 'don't care, you're GOING' which is FANTASTIC!!!

I'm off to England in September!

VACATION

Will be off line until the 9th. Happy March!

There's really not much to report, except that January is about to end and February is about to start with a bang. I thought the 'in like a lion' thing only applied in the spring? Apparently not. We are due for nearly 30cm of snow in the next two days, both of which are days I have to be out and about. :(

Other than that, life's been pretty quiet. I'm busy at work and 2 days a week at the museum. And inventory at the store starts next weekend so we're all scrambling to get everything done before that (not to mention sell everything before that. One of those is going better than the other.

I made it through January, though! Only two months left to go. I am thinking Florida is not going to happen this year, which is alright because that's money that I don't actually need to spend. Instead, an old uni friend and I are going to Ottawa for Winterlude to stay with another old uni friend. Should be a blast! It'll be cold and snowy and the driving might be a nightmare (401 + winter = natural disaster), but I'm still looking forward to it! I just need to find skates...

I am going to see the King's Speech this afternoon, on my own, because it won SAGs last night and will probably win Oscars and it's like my favourite cast ever. Also, I have nothing else to do until 5pm when work starts.
windemere: (Default)
This whole potential trip to Florida is trying my calm which defeats the purpose, so I'm giving up. It's almost the end of January. I'll survive and hey MORE MONEY FOR EUROPE!

I have an announcement to make. It's a premature announcement. I am making it in the hopes that that will make it not premature, but rather fact. It will be a promise to myself.

For my 28th birthday I will be in South/Central America. Planned right, possibly Chichen Itza. Planned spectacularly, Machupicchu.

1. I love this town. I went into the bank today (TD) and went to the teller to deposit my first pay cheque. I have this thing: if there is no line up at the tellers, I hate using the machines. I would rather speak to a person. Anyway, I get up there and I hand over the cheque and tell her I’d like to deposit it. Then I swipe my card. At this point the account comes up on her screen which says my branch is in Burlington. She asks me ‘so, are you working up here for the summer?’ to which I say yes. Then she looks at the cheque. ‘Oh, you’re working for Randy. How’s he doing?’ I take this completely in stride. ‘Not bad’. Then she asks what I’m doing for him for the summer. ‘Painting the new boat’. ‘Oh’, she says ‘and how’s that coming along?’ So we have this whole conversation.
*As a note, Bracebridge has a population of 16,000 (in the winter). It’s not that small. Except obviously it is.

2. This is going to sound crass, but I saw my first obese ten-year-old today. And all I wanted to do was turn to her also obese father and say ‘child abuse much?’ The girl weighed more than I do. (No posted comments about my weight, please)

3. I passed the first convoy headed to Huntsville today (not the first, but the first I’ve seen). You could tell, what with all the diplomatic licence plates...and the shiny tour bus. I just don’t get what they were doing on 118. Huntsville’s up 11. It was a big convoy too; at least a dozen cars and the bus.

4. The McDonald’s in Huntsville was evacuated today because of a bomb threat. My reaction to this is ‘lol, that’s the best you can do?’ It’s a McDonald’s, by all means bomb it to hell. (Except, of course not with people in it.)

Kate: I keep watching that Brand New Day vid you introduced me to. I don’t know why, but it’s made me fall in love with Eleven. And not in the way you’ll like. And Amy crosses her arms almost as much as I do. I never noticed.

You remember how, when you were little, every week you wanted to be something new? One week it was a ballerina, the next a scientist, the next a singer, etc.?

And then you grew up and realised none of those things were ever going to happen and you had to get a real job. And then you figured out what it was you wanted to do for the rest of your working life and you were happy and content.

And then you pretty much realised that was never going to happen.

So, I'm like five again, and have gone through about five career options in the last week and they are all (to me) sounding like dreams of a five-year-old, except not because I could actually do them. At least in a universe where impossible things happen. I just don't think I can face disappointment again. Seriously, I'm used to rejection, but there's only so much a person can take.

1. Dive Instructor. Doable, if I can find the money. Also: island in the Caribbean. Or Australia.

2. Editor. Doable. Kind of not so interested.

3. Marketing. Somewhat doable with a lot more education. Could be museum related.

4. Project Manager. Do-ing. Well, as of May 19th. We will take this one course at a time and see. May go on to certification (when I find the money).

5.a Return to England. Mostly do-able. Yes, I count this as a job. It would lead to a retail/pub job, but at least I'd be in the UK.
5.b Go to New Zealand. Mostly do-able. Again, it'd be retail or hostel work or something. But, again, New Frakking Zealand. Maybe a Hobbit extra? Or some adventure sports assistant? I've always wanted to try white water rafting.

I'm not really partial to any of them, but I have until October to decide what I'm going to do with the next five or so years of my life.

It's been a whirlwind trip, that's for certain. I flew in to Baltimore on Tuesday after two days at my aunt's in Toronto. It was a late flight, so it was nearly 9pm by the time I reached the RV park my parents are staying in just north-east of the DC border into Maryland. It's a really nice park, actually, and very busy! Lots of people are here for the Cherry Blossom Festival and just to tour, as it's a good time of year (usually good weather).

Wednesday and Thursday we spent touring DC by foot and tram. We saw a lot in a very short time, and I don't think I've really stopped to enjoy it all. Some of it I've wanted to see for years, like the centre of the National Cathedral (West Wing 'Two Cathedrals'), the National Archives (National Treasure), and the Natural History Museum (you have to ask?). We did two tram tours that covered most of the city, and I've walked the whole length of the Mall this week. The weather was really much too hot until Friday, when it was much too cold, but today was perfect. Mom and I went in to the city for the parade (while standing in line to get into the Archives) and it looked like a blast. Very well attended and organised. Afterwards we walked down to the Sakura festival that runs at the end of the Cherry Blossom Festival, and had pad thai for lunch as we walked back to the Capitol to take a few last pictures in the sun. The whole city looks so beautiful with the last of the cherry blossoms, tulips, budding trees and the white buildings. I could love it here! (Except for the traffic, tourists, and constant sirens)

Yesterday we had a `day off`and drove out to Virginia to the Air and Space Museum (also a Smithsonian). It was a fantastic place, definitely one of the best museums I`ve been too. They have a full sized replica of the space shuttle there and dozens of planes, including a concord and the Enola Gay. The exhibits were really well done, very focused on the planes and not on endless history. Even the text panels were well-written and very carefully thoughtout (considering how many international people visit the museum, it`s a good idea). It was a long trip back from Dulles in the traffic (gods, the traffic here), but I got back in time to go back into the city on my own (!) to meet Amber. Amber and I met and Exeter two years ago doing the same master`s degree and we`ve kept in touch. She came back to Washington to live with her dad, but she`s finding it tough to get a good job (or an interesting job) and wants to move. It was great to meet up with her.

Today I`m tired. I suppose it`s all catching up with me. It`s the most busy I`ve been since Florida two months ago (was that really two months), so I`m not surprised. Tomorrow we leave to head north to the New York-Pennsylvania border to a camp ground for the night. Then probably to one in Niagara Falls to shorten the trip. Will be back to Burlington Tuesday morning.

It`s been a great trip and I`m so glad I had the chance to make it. Despite my sometime aversion to Americans, I do think America has a lot to see and to offer and I hope I can see more of it (than Florida). I`d love to do a road trip around New England or down the east coast from Maine. And I want to see Boston these days; rather badly. Even if I`ll be disappointed that it doesn`t look like Vancouver.

See you on the other side!

(of the border, that is)

I have not had this problem for...well, as long as I can remember. Every other year I have been in school over Easter and used the long weekend as a break from classes (and for 4 years) studying for exams. For the last two years Easter has marked the beginning of Dissertations and since classes ended in March, Easter was more a chance to just...chill and start thinking about all that work. And I didn't get to go home.

This year, Easter is much more complicated. I am doing family dinner with the aunt (does that count as family if there's only two of us?) on Sunday in Toronto. On Saturday I have an eight hour shift (no break) at the museum and will no doubt come back that night, finish packing, and pass out (rightly so). I am working every day this week except Friday, which is the holiday. So, my Easter weekend is really summed up in what is supposed to be a beautiful last day of the week. But since it's a holiday, what to do?!

I haven't been to a Maple Syrup fesitval in about seven years, since before university started. I know Easter weekend is the last hoohaa for most places that run it. But if it's supposed to be nice it's going to be packed with people. I also want to go for a really long hike, which limits the places I can go. Must do some research into places nearby (I also don't want to empty my gas tank getting there).

*OMG, that pizza looks so good! Bugger, now I have a craving.*

Hum...I wonder if I search google for Maple Syrup festival I'll get the right links, because google has been failing me lately.

(a few minutes later)

Okay, looks like it's down to two within driving distance, reasonable entry fees, open and trails. Will still be packed, though. Which one to choose?

Crawford Lake or Mountsberg. I used to love going to Crawford Lake in the spring with the parents. Might bring back fond memories. Mountsberg and I have a bad history involving a best-not-talk-about-it Grade 6 trip.

Crawford Lake on Friday! Now, weather, please stay nice!

I am back. And YOU DID STUFF WHILE I WAS AWAY. LOTS AND LOTS OF FIC. Bastards, I can't read any of it until I see Jacksonville. Which it turns out I forgot to tape which means wait until Tuesday or download it. I am going with Tuesday because that means 5 less days of torture out of SIX WEEKS.

It makes sense in my head.

I just bawled my eyes out during the 2010 Olympic song 'I Believe'. I am going to cry for two weeks straight. Doubly so if we do badly.

Florida was great. Florida was a proper vacation. Not too hot and humid. No lying on a beach wasting hours of my life (just a lovely 3 mile speed walk along the shore). Just good food, good alcohol (by which I mean lots), good company, fantastic sightseeing and a comfortable bed. Oh, and the spa. But only after an hour at the gym doing cardio. I only treat myself when I've earned it.

Hell, I miss the spa already.

Pictures can be found at: http://s58.photobucket.com/albums/g242/Aromene/Florida/ I gave up captioning: it's too much effort. If one has a question, one can ask and I will answer directly.

I am so psyched about D.C.!

Would like everyone to know that despite the hurricane that blew through for 2 days and the gale force wind that lasted the week, she survived on cloud and 6 hours of sleep a night.

I believe sometime recently, when I was obviously more awake then I am now, I promised a post about the Lake District.

But I've lost interest, and the pictures say many many more words anyways.

Enjoy!

Well, work is over. To celebrate I went out to visit a few of the places I hadn't manage to get to in London and do a bit of shopping. The trip was mostly a bust on the shopping angle. Am now annoyed with tourists and it is obviously time to Get. Out. Of. London.

Good thing I have a 9am train tomorow to do exactly that! Of too Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall for a couple of days and then Grasmere/Ambleside for a couple more. Back Friday night.
