Spoilers: For Season 4 finale Sanctuary for None Part 2

James is right in one thing: she does need a rest. It has been a long sixteen decades of hard labour and many losses. She needs to let go of the past before she can move on to her future.

Nepal is peaceful at the end of the nineteenth century. It is still a place little frequented by anyone other than the most adventurous Europeans and Americans, but it is familiar to Helen. It is as good a place as any to rest and to plan.

James knows her better than anyone. He knows she will not sit contentedly by and wait a hundred years for it to all fall apart again. She cannot do so anymore than he could. But James knows better than to say anything to her in the days it takes her to organise her departure from London. Instead, he helps in whatever way he can, mostly in ensuring she avoids her past self. Since past Helen is dealing with the fallout of John's wretched betrayal, this isn't as hard to accomplish as it might be. On the last day, before she boards a ship that will carry her around Africa to India, James takes her in his arms and kisses her as he might have done in another lifetime and a hundred years ago for her. It is the last source of true human contact she will have for several years, and Helen is grateful for it.

Nepal doesn't change; not in a century, not in a millennium. It is exactly how she remembers it will be. And it is quiet.

Helen allows herself three years. A year would be suitable for a normal lifetime, but she has lived through too much to heal in one cycle around the sun. Instead, for the first time in her life, she allows herself the chance to truly mourn for those she has lost, for those mistakes she has made, and for those things that she still will not be able to change. Once she can think of Ashley or James or John without sadness clinching her heart, she sets her sights towards a future that will arrive all too soon. She has so much work that needs doing. Mistakes she has made cannot be undone, but she has a century to find a way to fix them.

In 1901, Helen arrives in New York, on Nikola Tesla's doorstep..
