Dec. 24th, 2010 09:56 pmReally, 95% of what I love about Canada is the sayings. Not the Canadianism, but the things you get to say because you live in this country. Or really, this province. Well, specifically the GTA.
Such as:
"I'm off to the lake for the weekend." The lake is always Muskoka, whether that's where you go or not.
"Headed to the cottage/cabin/summer house."
"Going north." Again, this is always assumed to be Muskoka, since everywhere is north.
"They live on the Mountain." Hamilton has two levels. The lower city and the upper city on the escartment plateau. It's 600ft above sea level but we call it the Mountain.
"I'm taking The Link." It's a highway connection in Hamilton.
"It's like the 400." The 400 is a highway that is basically a parking lot from May through September. Any highway with similar traffic can be referrenced as such.
"It's snowing on the westbound 401. It's sunny on the east." The 401 has to be the only highway in the world that gets different weather depending on the direction you are headed. IT's special like that.
"Headed into the city." Always Toronto.
"I have a two hour commute." "So, Oakville to Toronto, right?"
"Headed south." Florida.
"Down on Lakeshore." There is no up, Lakeshore runs along Lake Ontario.
And nicknames like: "The Snowbelt" "Golden Horseshoe" "Wine Country" "Cottage Country" "The North" "The City"
