My father, the techical engineer, keeps sending me emails like 'how do you call a phone from Skype?' and 'can I buy a European SIM card?' and 'how do you SMS?'

Like I know the answers to ALL THE TECHNOLOGY QUESTIONS IN THE UNIVERSE or something.

I'm the 'answer girl' for both my parents when it comes to high tech, in which I'm barely literate!

Google knows more than I do. And he knows how to use that. This is so revenge for my years of panic calls during my undergrad for things like 'BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH DADDY, HELP!!!'

Well of course you are, your research is about technology and the interwebz and stuff isn't it? ;-p
You can also look forward to being forwarded all sorts of job posts for which you are not even vaguely qualified for or interested in because your family conflates all things under the same vague rubric; for example, certain well-meaning individuals in my acquaintance truly believe that I can become a fashion designer or work in an alterations place because my PhD research was on fashion exhibitions. You know, one or the other, it's all frocks, isn't it? (I try to accept the advice in the spirit with which it is given, but I still feel stabby inside...)

Oh, my family does that ALL THE TIME! Especially my Mother, who has it in her head that a university degree can get you any job on the planet, if you just try hard enough.

Or my aunt, who doesn't understand things like '4-5 years experience' and 'teaching experience required' when she stumbles across jobs.

But my favourite is my financial advisor who doesn't understand the difference between a background in Classical Archaeology/artefact museums and fine art/modern art collections.

Yeah, my mother think I can/should go curate some oil company's art collection. Cuz that would be a GREAT fit for me, career- and intersts-wise... (she also thinks one can waltz into a university with resume in hand and get a professorial position... For someone who is an MD and is otherwise clever, she can be remarkably dim.)
But I get it; your family (and mine, too) think that you are so exceptionally amazing that you can do anything! Unfortunately, this belief is not compatible with the giving of constructive advice and assistance nor with laying off the stupid questions, already!

Yes, they think I'm awesome. Employers, however, unfortunately think otherwise!

I wish it was as easy as our families think it is!!
