I think we can classify this as a cautionary tale. A sort of 'what not to do' lesson. It's tragic, yes, but maybe it will have other people thinking a bit more and things like this will be less likely to happen. I can hope; because every year this happens to someone. Every. Single. Summer.

The Khun place burned down on Monday night. It was 104 years old. One of the owners decided it was chilly and they wanted an evening fire in the fireplace. They neglected to wait for it to burn out before they went to bed and woke up at 12am to find the house on fire. The Khun's live on an island. It was 1am before the fireboats arrived and by then the century old wooden cottage was gone. They managed to stop the forest fire from burning the rest of the island down (for which the other island owners are grateful, I'm sure).

There are literally only a handful of original cottages with the same owners up here. Now yes, that handful all live within a mile of the Khun's island, because that is Beaumaris and it was settled first. Still, it's definitely a loss to the history of Muskoka.

[Sarcasm] I can't wait to see what they rebuild with the insurance money. [End sarcasm]

On the upshot, all three fireplaces are still standing.

I'd prefer if they built something smaller than what burned, since it was a huge 3 story manor house. With the trees gone now, whatever it is will really stand out.
