So yesterday was fantastic for many reasons. A few of which had nothing to do with archaeology and went completely over Sarah's head. But that's okay; I like it that way.
The weather really could not have been more perfect. 24. Not a cloud in sight. Gentle breeze. Perfect day for a volcano to suddenly erupt. Alas, my luck is not that good...or bad. Still, it meant awesome pictures which, considering I only got 6 before my camera battery died last time (8 years ago) made Amy very, very happy. Also, it's April and not tourist season yet, so I actally got shots with NO PEOPLE IN THEM!
Sarah had never been to Pompeii before, and my last trip there involved a lot of getting lost and very little time seeing the villas. And did want to get pictures for my research paper. I did, mostly, except for a few that the villas were closed for (seems to be half of everything in Italy this spring).
We even managed to wander all the way up to the Villa of the Mysteries, which is a least a mile from the from gates and which I didn't even know existed the last time I was there. But hey, worth the hike!

Perhaps the most amusing factor of the day, at least for me and for anyone who actually watched the DW Confidential for last week, was wandering around the Forum Baths (which for those of you who didn't catch it were the ones David got a tour of) and standing at the entrance to the Forum and then the bodies (because Sarah was desperate to see them, even if I am just as creeped out as I was 8 years ago). And there are pictures of me standing exactly where David was and oh, I'm such a fangirl. Also, I'm pretty sure we ran across the same tour guide with a group of high schoolers, because he was dressed very similarly. ::snerk:: Oh, it was fun! Pictures related to this can be found here on LJ and no one else but my LJ friends will understand. Or understand that I am crazy.
Today is Rome's birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY), which amusingly they still celebrate 2761 years later. Think I'll make it to the 2800th? There has been two days of festivities already, and I was all set to go to the big ones today (procession along the Appian Way ::snerks again::, gladiatorial games, museum entry free), but it is rainy and my legs think walking to the bathroom is too far. Should have worn better shoes yesterday, but I was so tired of my trainers...Instead, I am catching up on things today, and library time, and then we have a lecture somewhere the other side of Rome tonight. By Andrew! On Herculaneum! Why didn't all this happy last weekend?
I have to go watch Planet of the Ood. And work.

Date: 2008-04-21 08:45 am (UTC)I enjoyed the photos all the more. I do hope you've not drawn eyes on the backs of your hands. Look for that stone rendering of the household Gods that features a certain blue box while you're there, will you?
