Does anyone know how to properly (officially, whatever) turn down an interview once it's been offered?

I had an interview last year at a college where it suddenly dawned on me... I just plain didn't want to go there, and realized even if it was the only place on earth I was accepted, still wouldn't go there. Of course, I made it to portfolio interview rounds...

Since the only form of communication I had with the school was by email, I contacted them by email and thanked them for the opportunity, but said I would not be attending the interview as planned.

And then they sent me junk mail for a year.

I don't know if that was suppose to be funny, but the last line made me laugh... acutally I am still laughing.
But I agree, just send a polit e-mail saying you won't be attending and I really don't think most people will care.
