Mar. 23rd, 2007 03:18 pmI got sidetracked yesterday when I meant to do this.
Yesterday was my 4-year anniversary on ff.net. By now I have little to no interest in the site and post my stories there more because it keeps them all in one place than for any other reason. I because a member solely to post "Twin Spirits" and then ended up posting about 50 other fics in the last 4 years. It's been a progressional transition over the course, and I can't actually read the first few fics I wrote because I just can't stop cringing in horror at how bad the writing is. But it's interesting to read back through and discover just where I got good a character studies and just where I stopped being worried about violence and even more interesting is to read back and discover the fics I wrote because I was coming down off some high or other and trying to remember what that high was.
It's been quite a trip, since I started originally writing book-fics and then moved on to LOTR and then finally caved and started to do TV shows. Now that I look back on it all, I realize that I've never really gotten the LOTR thing down, and I write it more because I enjoy writing that universe, but SGA has become something else entirely. It's not just fun to write, but I love the characters and I can usually figure out what their reactions to certain things will be. And sometimes, violence and war mixed with Rodney's insane sarcasm and John's penchant for finding everything funny is just a joy to write. I appreciate Tolkien's world and the work he did. But I understand how much fun the SGA/SG1 writers have on a daily basis.
I've really made a move from writing more conversation interspersed with description of landscape to entire fics that are descriptive monologues and I think I prefer them. It's the characters that interest me now, and not the events. And I think that's the biggest change I've made.
We'll see where I'm at in another year.
