You knew it was bound to happen.

I remember quite clearly walking out of the theatre after seeing Gladiator, and honestly being able to say nothing bad about it. Of course, that was before I knew much about Roman history. And before I cared about historic facts. And before I loathed Russell Crowe. But I still love the movie for what it is.

In ten years, I'm still going to love this one too.

I'll admit to being nowhere near an expert of the Crusades. After all, it's a time period in history I'd rather like to forget. I've spent the majority of my intelligent life seething over religious wars, so it makes sense, of course, that I'd steer clear of any interest in this one. I may have to rethink that of course. The point being, however, that I have no background in which to complain or praise the historical accuracy of the film. So I can only like it for what it is.

Which is another great accomplishment by Ridley Scott. The feel and music of the movie have Gladiator stamped all over them, so of course I love it. And if any LOTR fan can watch the Battle for Jerusalem without paralleling it with the Seige of Minas Tirith, they apparently haven't seen the 3rd movie enough. The actors were superb...but could one expect anything else from Liam Neison, Jeremy Irons and Brenden Gleeson? And Marton Csokas...because he finally got A BIG ROLE. The special effects were quite well done; Ridley does enjoy blowing things up. And for once the love story did not go the way I thought it would. What a nice change.

So, in other, much shorter, words: Go see it. And enjoy it...sheerly for what it is. A movie about apposing religions that doesn't come across as religious.

However, Orlando Bloom still only has two facial expressions: confused and determined. And he's going to find himself perminately typecast as a blacksmith if he keeps this up.
